TRAI Won’t Consider Responses That Have Come In Via Facebook Notifications
So after campaigning for several days, we the #NetNeutrality activists finally got some good news. TRAI, on 31st Dec’15 has sent out a stern message to supporters of Facebook’s Free Basics campaign.
TRAI hopes to arrive at a conclusion on differential data pricing by the end of January and has asked Reliance communication to stop the Free Basics service for now. TRAI received approximately 14 Lakh responses in support of Free Basics, It said it will not consider responses that have come in via Facebook direct notification route and has asked the stakeholders to treat the consultation as a voting activity. The regulator will now reach out to the respondent and seek a justification from them.
“We have received overall around 18.2 Lakh responses and we have found that a large percentage of the comments are about supporting a specific product called Free Basics. They are template comments. The problem is we have asked for comments on some specific questions on differential data pricing in our paper. Instead we have got responses on supporting Free Basics” – R.S.Sharma, Chairman, TRAI
The regulator has extended the deadline for comments till 7th Jan’16 and is expected to come out with a clear policy by the end of January.
