A cafe in the Indian city of Agra located opposite the Taj Mahal run by acid attack survivors is aiming remove the stigma surrounding victims of acid attacks. Cafe Sheroes’ Hangout is an initiative started by the Stop Acid Attacks campaign and the Chaanv Foundation. The cafe took almost a month to come up with an initial investment of about Rs 3 lakh, much of which was raised by a website dedicated to Nitu, an acid attack survivor. The outlet which has been christened as “Cafe Sheroes hangout” a play on the word Heroes to salute the spirit of female acid attack survivors, the outlet has been envisaged as a centre of various activities. It houses a library, a community radio hub and a boutique corner that showcases acid attack survivors work. “The victims had many dreams which were shattered by the attack. We now aim to make them dependent and give them an opportunity to live their dreams,” says Ashish Shukla, a member of the non governmental body. “We look forward to empower the women and make them independent. As we cannot make centres everywhere in the country, we are trying to make a common centre where the survivors can come and share their experiences with the common people,” says Ashish Shukla. Recently Scoopwhoop travelled to Agra to meet those few brave women who are running the cafe.
Setbacks in life can only make you stronger! This is their fight for freedom, their search for independence. Do visit them when you visit Taj Mahal.
